Interdisciplinary Symposium on Violence

The Interdisciplinary Network of Studies on Violence - RIEV has been conducting interdisciplinary research on violence and human rights violations since 2017, in both national and international contexts. RIEV's members include: the Federal University of Paraíba - UFPB, the University of Valencia - UV, and the University Institute of Creativity and Educational Innovations (ICIE) - Spain, the Federal University of Santa Catarina - UFSC, the Federal University of Alagoas - UFAL, the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM, the State University of Londrina - UEL, the Foundation for Support of Diversity of Alagoas, and the Marist College Pio X - João Pessoa (PB).

As part of our mission, we are launching the INTERDISCIPLINARY SYMPOSIUM ON VIOLENCE, which aims to problematize the phenomenon of violence and possible responses to violent acts occurring in current macro and micro-social, political, and economic environments, with a focus on education.

The II International Symposium Jürgen Habermas aims to study the theme Public Sphere: Changes and Perspectives in Jürgen Habermas's Thought, one of the most important representatives of contemporary critical thought.
In 1962, Habermas published Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit. He returned to the subject almost thirty years later, writing a long preface to the 1990 edition. In this year of 2022, exactly sixty years later, Ein neuer Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit und die deliberative Politik emerges, indicating the centrality of the theme to the author's work. In this latest text, Habermas argues that new internet communication media lead to a semi-public, fragmented communication, which distorts the perception of the political public sphere, thereby endangering an important subjective prerequisite for the deliberative mode of opinion formation and decision-making for an increasing proportion of citizens. Issues like this can be radicalized towards the negation of the existence of public opinion, as Bourdieu argues.
The II International Symposium Jürgen Habermas invites researchers to present their research on this theme. Other topics on Habermas's philosophy are also welcome.
The event will bring together researchers from Latin America and Europe.

Jürgen Habermas (Düsseldorf, June 18, 1929) is a German philosopher and sociologist, heir to the tradition of Critical Theory and American Pragmatism, and a member of the second generation of the Frankfurt School. He has devoted his life to studying the Public Sphere and Democracy. He formulated the Theory of Communicative Action in a very original way in the 1980s, which represented a paradigm shift in the understanding of the Democratic Rule of Law and the Republican conception of the State. He is considered one of the most important contemporary intellectuals.

Despite the ongoing local and global pandemic landscape, the use of information and communication technologies has enabled the Interdisciplinary Network of Studies on Violence - RIEV (www.ufpb.br/riev) to mobilize scholars and researchers from the national and international scientific community who study Habermasian thought, to hold the I International Symposium Jürgen Habermas. This is a joint effort of the Federal University of Paraíba, the Federal University of Santa Catarina, the University of Valencia - Spain, and the Federal University of Alagoas. The event will take place via RIEV's YouTube Channel (bit.ly/CanalRIEV), from November 23 to 26, 2021, with the central theme: Global Collective Actions and Local Lifeworlds in Dialogue. Symposium Democracy in Crisis

The Symposium Democracy in Crisis will take place on May 23, 2018 (Wednesday) at the Center for Education, UFPB Campus I and will feature two roundtable discussions, a book presentation, and a website launch. The event is free to attend and is intended for all those interested in the theme. The symposium is organized by the Interdisciplinary Network of Studies on Violence (RIEV).

The organization of the Symposium Democracy in Crisis is justified in the context of the current complex social situation, which includes the crisis of democracies, taking on different forms depending on the circumstances in which they are found, such as fundamentalisms, polarization of ideologies, restriction of rights, violations of fundamental rights, restriction of freedoms, political crises, ethical and moral crises, premature death, hunger, misery, and increased violence in all its forms. Faced with this panorama, the RIEV presents the Symposium Democracy in Crisis with the aim of contributing to the debate on the conflicts and tensions that cross democracies in their multiple facets.

The symposium's program will begin at 9am with the launch of the RIEV website and then, the first Roundtable with the theme Democracy in Crisis, moderated by Dr. Edna Brennand (RIEV coordinator at UFPB) and with contributions from Dr. Delamar Volpato Dutra (RIEV coordinator at the Federal University of Santa Catarina); State Deputy Estela Bezerra; and Dr. Maria Creusa Borges (Postgraduate Program in Legal Sciences, UFPB).

At 3pm, the second Roundtable entitled University and Violence will be moderated by student Aloirmar José da Silva (Administrative Manager of RIEV) and with contributions from Dr. Bernardina Freire (Vice-Rector of UFPB), Dr. Emília Prestes (Postgraduate Program in Education, UFPB) and Dr. Guilherme Ataíde (Postgraduate Program in Information Science, UFPB).

To conclude the program, there will be the launch of the book The Greek Origins of Western Law by authors Eduardo de Almeida Rufino and Emmanoel de Almeida Rufino and a presentation by Dr. Delamar Volpato Dutra (UFSC).
